The Heartline Café name comes from the Zuni Indian symbol for long life, luck and good health. It is owned by Chuck and Phyllis Cline, who opened the restaurant in March of 1991.
Chuck, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, is the Executive Chef. The menu has Asian, European and Mediterranean influences. Although Chuck has now retired, he created the recipes that are prepared daily in the restaurant.
In addition to the main restaurant, they own a second restaurant next door, the Gourmet Express. The Gourmet Express, which started as a gourmet deli, was transformed overnight into a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Even though the Heartline Cafe is considered fine dining, it is very casual. Sedona is a tourist town, considered the Gateway to the Grand Canyon. Several million people pass through here every year, and Chuck and Phyllis wanted to accommodate the weary travelers, while preparing for them exceptional meals.
Phyllis’s background is in horticulture, and it shows in the gardens surrounding both restaurants. In the Spring, the patio behind the main restaurant is enveloped in Star Jasmine, herbs & veggies which are used in the kitchen, and fresh flowers which are placed on the tables nightly.
The patio also serves as an intimate venue for rehearsal dinners and wedding receptions. Both the main dining room and the Gourmet Express, which features the “Fireside Room” , are also available for receptions, private parties, banquets, etc.
The Heartline Café is the recipient of many awards, most recently the 2011 Customer Service Excellence Award, given by the Chamber of Commerce.
They’re famous in Japan for their Pecan Crusted Trout with Dijon Crème Sauce. They have hosted many Japanese dignitaries, from movie stars to opera singers. While many of their guests do not speak English, they come with tour books in hand, and show us the picture of the trout!
